Section 109: Arenas Analysis

January 19, 2010

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was on NBATV today. He says Arenas will likely get 3 to 6 months jail time. Sentencing will take place on March 26.

Toobin doesn’t think the “moral turpitude” language in the player’s Collective Bargaining Agreement would result in Arenas’s contract being voided. The NBA didn’t allow Golden State to void Latrell Sprewell’s contract after he choked P.J. Carlesimo. But he added, nobody knows for sure.

Toobin noted in a response to question from David Aldridge that if the Wizards were still playing in Maryland, the gun laws are so different that he probably wouldn’t be in the mess he’s in. He added that if he was in Texas, they’d probably “give him the keys to the city.”

Sounds like this means the Wizards will need to hold on to Jamison now.

Depending on the length of the sentence and when he’s required to start serving, Arenas could be off the court until December. The Wizards would probably stick with the sure thing and keep their two other stars, then focus on squirming out of Arenas’s contract.
